Cresote

Creosote, also known as coal tar creosote, is a dark brown to black oily liquid with a distinct, pungent odor. It is derived from the distillation of coal tar and is composed of various aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, and other organic compounds. Creosote has long been valued for its preservative properties and has been used for wood preservation, particularly in outdoor applications where resistance to decay and insect attack is required. It penetrates deeply into wood fibers, forming a protective barrier that helps to prevent rot, fungi, and insect damage, extending the lifespan of treated wood. Creosote-treated wood is commonly used for railroad ties, utility poles, fence posts, and outdoor structures. However, due to its toxicity and environmental concerns, the use of creosote has become more restricted in recent years, with alternative wood preservatives being favored in many applications.
